How To Buy Michael Jackson Memorabilia

Given his recent tragic death, it is unsurprising that there is a vast array of Michael Jackson memorabilia out there. However, if you have already got your favorite album, a tour program or the ticket from the This It Tour, what can you get to show people your dedication to the King of Pop?

A good start is to consider what is your favorite Jackson era or music. For example, if Thriller is your favorite album, then you may want to look for rare album covers, concert T shirts or programs. You can get magazine covers or newspapers from the time to add a bit of historical context. Once you have put them together, you may want to create a display. Glass cases and solid frames are usually a good idea.

These unique items can really add to a display or a collection, showing an extra personal touch people may not expect. An item does not have to be hugely expensive to be unusual and get attention. For example, how many people own a Michael Jackson California Raisin doll or his own brand of Male Cologne or Ladies Fragrance?

Thriller was the biggest selling album of all time and unsurprisingly this produced a large number of spin offs, most recently a 25th year reissue with a digitally remastered soundtrack. What is more surprising is the wide variety available. For example, you can play with a Thriller jigsaw puzzle or mask odours with a Thriller air freshener.

Another thing to look out for what are known as cut signatures. This is when somebody takes a signature from another source, like a dedicated message or letter and sells it as a separate piece. A reputable dealer should tell you whether or not an item is a cut signature.

This is of course not the only form of memorabilia available. There are everything from tour programs to rare 7 and 12 inch vinyls. It is worth noting different items can be described as limited edition or rare. Limited edition products are often mass manufactured, albeit with a different label. Genuinely rare pieces tend to be made for specific purposes.

Given the eccentric nature of this unique performer, this is reflected in the kind of memorabilia that can be purchased. In a recent auction, you could buy a robot head from the 1988 film Moonwalker, or a set of gloves bejeweled with Swarovski crystals.

More disturbingly, there are some rather more morbid items available on sale, such as flowers that were placed on his grave. This is part of a worrying trend and it is unlikely such items would have long term value.

The reason you should know a fair price is that you get an idea how much is reasonable. If it is much more expensive than you expect than it is not worth purchasing and you are being ripped off. If it is a lot cheaper than the odds are you are buying a fake.

This does assume that you are looking to invest in something as a physical item. In some cases, the value may be more sentimental, such as the tickets people received when Michael Jackson was due to play the This Is It gig at the O2 arena in London. Tour programs and limited edition album covers are a great way of showing off your favorite music. In short, you should look for the items that you have a personal connection to and would be proud to display.
